1 At the meeting of, the Borough Council on Tuesday evening, Councillor Templo . referred to'the,disgraceful state .of Pownall Streets Although: the work of.forming,and metalling'" thie street had been included in the loan, nothing had been done, and resi : dehta were very rightly complaining, Tho speaker was of opinion that the eetiinate of £2(>o submitted by tho engineer about a fortnight/ago was altogether too highland tho street could.be put into .order,,for a very iMKih less sum out of the street-maintcrianco account. Ho. moved that the. engineer be' instructed to prepare, a report, to be brought before-'the next-meeting of the-Works Committee,. as to tho cost of grading,.metalling, and forming the',road for..a distance of 35 chains, ' and a width' of 10. feet, with from 16 to 18 yards of metal to the chain. The motion was secondjd ,by Councillor. Jlorris, and, on beiug put to the meeting, carried unanimously- ■ ■■-.•■ A' special meeting' of tho ' Masterton Lawn Tennis.Club was held on Tuesday evening. Mr. D. Caselbcrg ■ and thero was a fair attendance of members.' On itho motion of Mr. H'. M.' Boddington, it was unanimously decided that Hulo No. 7 be amended to road: ','The subscription shall be-fixed at 30s. for mpn,-and 15s. for ladies, such subscription being duo and payable at tho. opening of-the-season, and, if; not paid by. December 31, tho mombcr. in default shall pay a line of one shilling par month whilst the sutecriptioii'remains unpaid," and "that tho'sum of , 2s.' 6d. from activo members 1 subscriptions bo-allocated fovtho purpose o'i; providing for. the.' cxpeiise.s in connection with, afternoon tea.'.'.. , . , A, motion to abolish .the use. of 'the. telephone , at, tho tennis grounds'. VM.,'negatived. ■ A meeting of tho 'Masterton Fire 'Brigade .was. held on> Tuesday evening. , : Superintendant Jenkins presided, and there was a good attendance. One • honorary' meuiher was elected. The brigade unanimously decided, to act iii conjunction with tho fire police, in organising a benefit concert in aid of a member of tho firo police who was recently_ injured at Waitotara. .'.'■■ , During the month of August bright sunshine was recorded on twenty-eight days in Masterton, the total hour 3 being. 180 —a daily average of 5 hours, 48 minutc3. Tho maximum daily record was 10 'hours 20 minutes.
