(Inrresiinndcnt,) ■_ ; The vital statistics -for Hastings for tho month of August are as .follow:—Marriages; 3; births, 35;. deaths, 1 '?. : -. ■ - ; . -.; ~ Tho monthly meetiiigof the-..Hastings Rugby Sub-TJnion was held last night, Mr. R: W.Halse presiding. l Tho Wairoa Subunion asked if a match could be played at Mohaka, , but,, owing to .the uncertainty, of steamer arrangements, the request'could not be granted.' The secretary reported'tint the was. prepared to play a shield match on Saturday next at Hastings,' aiid it was resolved that half the gate be given the. visitors, and that they pay their own expenses. . Teams, .for Saturday's •'crigage■ments were selected. ••..
The' Heretaunga Lodge (Masonic) held an enjoyable, ladies- night last evening; when about 120 wcro present, including visitors from" other lodges.,.Tho hall was tastefully decorated and arranged' in drawing-room style. : Vocal' and instrumental items' were contributed,' and a; proverbs, competition' was also held, lady Competitors being- required to write as many proverbs as possiulo in' a quarter of an hour: In this event -Miss' M. Basil' Jones won Grst prize, Miss I. Thomp-son-was. second, and Mrs. -M: Johnson third. Dancing was afterwards' indulctd in, and the'gathering broke up-about midnight;' '• '.St. Matthqw.'s.-Industrial Exhibition was opened by Sir William 1 Russell to-day.. 'In declaring the exhibition tho speaker regretted; that the' member' for -the. district had: fpund it-impossible to' , ■ attend. . How-, ever,, that pleasure, fell-to him. He had seen many, bazaars in his time, but could not remember ■having seen a better, one,that) this.' That success would bo achieved ho'had no doubt; 'the largo entries receivtd,- and tho amount, of. enthusiasm shown, giiarinleed that. Ho was. glad to stato that'-'these exlub\tions were to bo held biennially, and (without wishing to individualise) ho considore'd. that! .tfren*:--credit was due to tho vicar (Rev. The interior of the'drill-hall is. entirely, taken "up .with numerous stalls; all artistically arranged, and the various competitive' sections aro well filled, so that 'the judges- have been kept very -busy giving their awards. .-Various sideshows..are held nightly, and'are well attended. Heavy, rain set-in last nightj and tin's, to a certain extent, affected the attendance. The: exhibition will remain open' until Friday next.
