A case of ; interest to farmers was. heard at; tho Assessment Court to-day, 'tho Court being called on to .adjudicate on the protest ot Peter Wright, of. Motu, farmer, against being assessed £3690 for timber- standing on his, land. It is generally admitted that when the railway reaches Motu (which-may be tho c'ase'iri'five years' timo), any timber then standing will, be worth a considerable amount. .This fact apparently actuated the Government Valuer, who seemed to think that tho farmer; was refraining from clearing part of -his land, because of the speculative value of the timber. -. The Court ruled that, as the timber was nf.no value at the present.time, .there being no means to get it to a market, the valuation (must, bo redu'oed by -the full £3690.
