WORK IN MINES.
THE BRITISH EIGHT HOURS ACT. STATEMENT BY MR. GLADSTONE. (Dj leleer»ph.-Proßs Aasoclallon.-Oopyrltntl London, August 27. The Right Hon. H. Gladstone, Homo Secretary, informed a deputation from tho Miners' Federation of Britain that the clause In the Eight Hours Act allowing si\ty hours extra to be worked in a jear was not inserted merely to increase the number of working hours per day, but to help matters in times of pressure. Tho Minister added that ho intended to administer the Act in tho same spirit in which it was passed. He would investigate disputes submitted to him, and if it were found that the object of tho Act was being infringed, ho would put matters right. Mr. Gladstone is appointing a committeo of experts to roviso tho rules for tho use of electrical plant in mines.
