AN INNOVATION.
Sir,—We wore the other day informed, through ' the columns of. the press that the .Union Steam > Ship Company propose imposing <1 charge of '■ 3d. per'head oif persons seeing friends .off by boat to Sydney and other places. \Ve do , not doubt their authority in taking such, (i , step, nor do we doubt that the, public will •take kindly, to so small a-fine, seeing it is being; imposed in "the-interest-of that body. But many of your readers are anxious to know what the U.S.S. Company purpose, doing with money : raised in this manner. Though ' the public regard the step as ; a necessary (ind wise one, ; they also think that it would have been some credit to • tlie .' company 'had' they ..an-nounced-their intention of handing' the money thus: raised to ' some: charitable institution.—l am,, etc., ■ '■ W.
