Buddo," Acting-llimstcr for J % Lands, informed a Dominion reporter that under the Act it was necessary to appoint a commission in connection with*the matter,-" ono > meniber of which -"-must bo the chief surveyor, for the province, and- , the other two must be members of ~the land board The Government had selected Mr Flannagan, Commissioner of Crown Lands in Canterbury, Mr. Haszard, acting-chief surveyor, and Miv Jamos Stevenson, a member of the board, to constitute the commission ■Whilst he (the Minister) was in the South Island recently sevn-al deputations urged upon him that further land for settlement was of great importance to Canterbury, and that, as far as possible, rune falling in should be i -utilised foi closer settlement. He pointed t . out that much of the land m question was high, and v ■ periodically visited,, by snow storms. In order to meet the views of those interested in qliiser settlement an informal commission was promised to' assist m rccpm- , mending subdivisions that would be safe in euch country It had nou been decided by the Government to appoint the informal commissron to_consider the matter That cora- { mission would comprise Mr R Guthrio, of Mackenzie County, Mr H M Reeves, of Ash- / , burton County, and Mr R Parish, of Ashfey County.
