VALUABLE CLYDESDALES.

MR, SHORT AS A HORSE BREEDER. A group of thirteen magnifioeiit young Clydesdale mares were to be seen at Watts's stables, Wellington, yesterday. They . be r longed to Mr. Ernest Short, {he well-known stud breeder of Rornncy sheep and Hereford cattle, and had been collected by him from the pick of the South Island. They represent the foundations of a new enterprise' in which Mr. Short is embarking, and 1 , according to good judges these thirtee.ii mare's comprise the aristocracy of the breed in this country. Many of them are prize winners, and others are likely, to figure at the front at future shows when they have developed. Mr. Short,, in fact, looks forward with some pleasure to tbe prospect of a tilt, on a large scale, with some of the North Island breeders who hitherto have scooped pools at the shows. This," however, is the lighter side of the game: In regard to the more' solid matter —the production of I 'young stock that will fill the splendid markets that now exist 'for heavy draught horses—Mr. Short's arrangements are equally ambitious. Hp recently comiriissioned 1 Mr. Hugh Hooken, the well-known Feilding horse judge, assisted by his able stud manager, Mr. John Winchester, to buy the best stallion obtainable in Britain, and also one, two?, or three other animals. Mr. Short's agents, Messrs. Dalgety and Co., have now received a cable-: grain from Mr. Hocken stating that he is shipping by the steamer Rimutaka (due here on October 19) a .Clydesdale stallion, a filly, a colt, and three mares.. . • _ These, with the other breeding animate Mr. Short has. collected locally, add, the excellent stock he already possesses at Feilding, must make up a formidable stud. Mr. Short's career with this valuable and useful, breed of horse will be watched with keen interest. v
