OBITUARY.

Mr. Ewen ' Maodonell, ex-Inspector • of Police, died yesterday at Petdne, in his 62nd year. -.Mr.' Macdonell joined the force at Dunedin, and served there and in Southland until 1899, When he war - appointed, subinspector at Wellington. In the following year lis was appointed to the inspectorship at Gre.vfflouth, and in 1902 was transferred to Napier, where he remained until he retired from the service last year, Since his retirement he had lived at Petone. The late Mr. Macdonell was a very active police officer, and took much interest in athletics and in Scottish gatherings. He leaves a widow and two sons and two daughters. One of the sons is in the service of the National. Bank in this city,'and the other is in the Public Works Department.

Later onj ho opened the Kaiftpoi Hotel, ami conducted it for some years ( being then ap--pointed pilot at Kaiapoi, which position no hold until about twelve years ago.
