OBITUARY.
Mr. Ewen ' Maodonell, ex-Inspector • of Police, died yesterday at Petdne, in his 62nd year. -.Mr.' Macdonell joined the force at Dunedin, and served there and in Southland until 1899, When he war - appointed, subinspector at Wellington. In the following year lis was appointed to the inspectorship at Gre.vfflouth, and in 1902 was transferred to Napier, where he remained until he retired from the service last year, Since his retirement he had lived at Petone. The late Mr. Macdonell was a very active police officer, and took much interest in athletics and in Scottish gatherings. He leaves a widow and two sons and two daughters. One of the sons is in the service of the National. Bank in this city,'and the other is in the Public Works Department.
Captain G> F. Day, who died in Christchurch on Tuesday, arrived with his parents in Wellington in 1841. < Their-. memory is perpetuated in the name ot Day's Bay, where they settled. The lad adopted a seafaring life, which brought him into touch with .the commercial life of Canterbury. About 1846 he been mo owner of the sohooner Flirt) and began to trade between Wellington and the Marlborough Sounds and Foxton. In 1848 h(J tnade a trip to Lyttelton, taking his pnr&nts with him, They dccidcd ■to take up land in Sumner, and he took them round in the Flirt, which wis the firfet decked vessel to entef th<j Heathcoto River. For tome years Captain Day traded between Sumher and Lyttelton, and round the boyS of Banks Poninsula. When settlement began at Kaiapoi. lie took the first Cargo Up tho Waimakarlri to tho township. Later onj ho opened the Kaiftpoi Hotel, ami conducted it for some years ( being then ap--pointed pilot at Kaiapoi, which position no hold until about twelve years ago.
