TASMANIAN POTATO BLIGHTS.
• f TOO MUCH OUTCRY. ; ,<•'.' ,-.- Apparently there has been too much'ado made over "tho diseaso ■ in' Tasmanian potatoes. Mr. T. W.. Kirk, Government Biologist, of New Zealand, who, at the request of the Tasmanian- Government, .has gone over to tho potato blight in that State, has cabled to the: Minister for Agrioulturo (Hon. T. Mackenzie) that, the .outbreak of Irish blight in Tasmania is not : so se'rious as was anticipated,' and 'that there is much sound .stock there, j '■-'•'[ ■'.
The Hon. T. Mackenzie states that an aero of ground would grow all the Ta'smanian potatoes that have been landed in New Zealand since the beginning of '- June. : Prohibition of produce imports seems to be a popular cry among protectionist Australian farmers, and this time -poor; little Tasmania has been hit very hard. She depends very largely on'her potato'crop, and the wild Australian measures recently adopted to -shut■ ..the.--Australian .• ..potato markets agairist;;her- imist have' caused hor a loss of some.',thousands of Mr. Kirk's investigations:;' arid reports ; may perhaps ease the situation for .hei/for the remaining pa'rtfof the season.
