Masaeiiot's "Bacchus," the. libretto of which was one of the last work's of the late Catullo Mendes,. was' produced;at the Opora (Paris) on May 5 last. The theme of the opera, the conquest of the Indies by the god;offers, suys the Paris correspondent of the New York "Titnes," great scope for Oriental colour in the stage pictures and orchestration. Although not likely'-'to add greatly to the glory of the composer of "Manon" and "Le Jongleur," the score bears everywhere the imprint of his genius- for scenic music. There are several oxoellent passages, especially in tho fourth act. :Lunien-Mura-torej as Bacchus, sang with intelligence and artistic effect. Mmo. Breval was magnificent in the pathetic part of Ariana. The scenic effects and ballot were wortby,,tlifl. traditions of the bouse.
