DEATH OF A CANTERBURY PIONEER.
4 MR. RICHARD MORTEN. (By Tolcuroph.—Spcclnl, Correspondent.). : ' Chrlstchuroh, August 21. - An old Canterbury colonist, Mr. Richard May Morten, died yesterday, at the ago'of eighths years. Mr. Morton loft Eugland in 1559 for Victoria, and, after a Bliorfc stay 'in Tasmania, settled in Canterbury in 1860 as a, sheep-farmer at Rakaia. Ho subsequently purchased "Mount Pleasant," onl the Port Hills—a block of 6000 aorcs, and other sheep stations soon after. Comintj to Christchurch he bought the land which forms tho site of Morten's Buildings, now occupied , , by tho United Service Hotel, paying £31 CO, i which was at that time an v cxtromoly high price. How good the investment proved, however, timo has shown. Mr. Morten was ono of tho oldest members of the Canterbury Jockey Club.
