•Tenders for the supply of road metal for the repair of the Main lload, westward pf Gib-' Road, were opened, and '. that of J. llabey, at 2s. BJd, per oubio yard was accepted. The ; T^orks , Committee reported upon the' matter of accumulation'of-gtprni-water in the vicinity of the Town Hall, and it was decided! to approach the secretary of the Town' Hall Company, with a view.to/obtaining permission fo sink .a pit, and arrange a diversion-to. carry off the water. Reporting upon the river , protection works, on behalf of. the Works'. Committee, Commissioner Craig stated that the groyne, was standing well, and had sustained no injury in spite of the unprecedented series pf floods which had taken.place since the work was put in hand. In its norm,al condition the river was now-entirely in its new channel, and (i considerable ■ amount of deposit had taken, place in the old one, which was gradually filling in. Not a foot of land had been lost since the works had been, completed. He considered, as a precautionary matter, that the board should pot in a low win? crate from the pnd of the existing: grbyne, extending downstream, so p 5 to preclude the possibility of the river working back towards the township side, ■ This worlj: be constructed of strong pheep-aetting, ; and ; would ;not 'cpst more thftn , j6sat the outside. It was not really •necesr sary to do :this wprkj but, , as a.measure, of safety, hte recommended that it be carried out. ■The chairman reported that, the landowners of the r town district, : whose properties had been threatened by the river encroachments outside the-Town Board boundaries, had -expressed ' themselves as entirely satisfied with the works and the protection afforded. 1 He added that their approval had been ' emphasised by- their contributing' substantially towards the cost of, tllß Wol*tS>''■■ -'■ ■' ' .•' ■' .
