Mr. Shaw also commended" tho toresight of the Borough Council in going in for a municipal gas service, high-pressure water supply, and a drainage scheme, all or which'would be valuable assets.. The debate was continued by Messrs/ Harvey and Fry, and the chairman, but some of tlio speakers were of the opinion that agricultural land around the town' was too. high-priced.for new. settlers to get a comfortable livelihood. A fancy, fair, promoted by' a:committee of ladies in tho town,'with Mrs. J. \Vhitaker as hon. secretary, was opened ill the Oontury Hall on Wednesday afternoon, by. Mr, Byron Brown, Otaki. jttr. ,T. A.V..8. Ifridson presided, and stated that tho woullicr was appropriate on account; of the amount of water falling—a commodity most useful to a fire brigade. Captain R-: J. Jones, of the brigade, gave a short, resume of the history of the Levin Fire Brigade. Mr. Byron Broivn expressed the pleasure which lie felt at being asked to open the fair. Ho stated that people in Levin ought to bo proud of their brigade, and lie hoped that, ere long, the municipality would see its way to provide all tho funds required- for, its upkeep. In Otaki the residents had no organisation for lighting fires, and . so were almost helpless when an outbreak-occurred. He concluded by wishing the brigade /every success. Their captain, Mr.- Jones, was ail old schoolfellow of his, they having attended Mount-Cook School together, and ho was suro that tho work was in good hands. Mr. Brown then- declared the sale open.
