PALMA TROPHY.
Canada Will not compete. (By Telegraph.—Frosa Association.—Goprrltht.l • - Ottawa, August 17. ' Canada will not send a rifle team this year, to compete for the Palma international trophy, held since 1903 by the United States. ' IN THE GRIP OF THE AMERICAN. 7 , The Palma Trophy is an international competition, and tho ranges are 800, 900, and 1000 yards; fifteen shots. In 1903 tho United States took the Trophy away from Britain, with a score of 1570; Great Britain, 1555; Canada, 1518 j Australia, 1501'; Natal, 1399; Norway, 1241; France, 1230. The Trophy has since remained ,in tho United States. The last oontest was at the Canadian meeting in 1907. It took place at Rockcliffe range, Ottawa, Canada, on September '7, and tho American team won, with a score of 1712 out of a possible 1800, 142 points higher than the best previous world's record, made by the. Great Britain team in 1902. Bryant, of the winning team, also made a world's record of 74 out of a possible, 75 at 1000 yards. Other total scores were:—Canada, 1671; Australia,. 1653; Great Britain, 1580. In the 1907 contest tho 'United States team Used the ICrag-Jorgensen rifle, to which was attached the service peep-sight, which, under theideai weather conditions which prevailed gave them a great advantage. The British, Australians, and Canadians used the I.fle-Enfield or LeeMetford. The United representatives also had tho advantago of special ammunition, every oartridgo being hand-loaded, and it is conceded that their ammunition was superior to that of the other teams.
