; MR. A. E. REMINGTON, Mr. Arthur E. lieinington, member of the House of Iteprescntatiyes for Ra'ngitikci, who has been in a. delicate state of health for some months past, died at his residence in Tinalcori:Road, at an early hour yesterday morning. Tho deceased, who .was's3 years of age;' was born in New Plymouth, but at an early age was taken to. England. . He was educated at ,a private school in Jersey (Channel.-Islands), und returned .to New Zealand as. a young man, setting up in busi-

ness as a pharmacist in Bulls (Rangitikei) some 25 years ago. From tho outset he took a lively interest in local affairs, and from 1879 to 1890 occupied tho position of chairman .of tho Hulls Town Board. For eleven years (1881-1891) he was a member of the ltangitikei County Council, and for four years (1887-1891) a member ..of the Wanganui Hospital Board. Some twenty years ago he left Bulls and settled in Hunterville, where ho became chairman of the Huntorvillo Town Board (1905-6), remaining in that town until ho took up his residence in Wellington about two years ago. In 1902 Mr. Remington was selected to be-the Government 'candidate for Rangitikei, by the late Mr. Seddon at a political gathering held at Mangawcka, and he was'elected. , Mr. Remington's end was brought about by a stroke of paralysis. THE RANGITIKEI SEAT. Tlio death of Mr. A. E. Remjngton brings about a by-election for llangitikei. At tne last election lio contested the scat with' Mr. R. AY. Smith, tho voting on that occasion being—A. E. Remington, 2160; R. W. Smith, 2024. In tlie caso of the death of a member it is the duty of the Speaker to issue u warrant to , the Clerk of the Writs (Mr. Hugh Pollen) directing him to issue a writ to supply the vacancy. Tlio writ is issued to tho returning officer of tho district, who forthwith proceeds to .arrange for the election lo take place at such time as shall enable him to return tho writ with the name of the elected candidate within 21 days from tho time the writ is issued. It. is stated %t Mr. Frank F. Hockley, of Huntorville, intends to stand, for the llangitikei seat in tho Opposition interest.
