Grand Jury at tho opening of the Criminal Sessions of tho Supremo Court at Christchurch, Mr. Justico Deimiston stated that it was satisfactory that only one case of' a sexual nature appeared oil the calendar. Tho following prisoners wiSre sentenced—Jameß George Murphy, eighteen months' imprisonment for theft and escaping .from custody; James Wateon, false declaration under Section 53 of the Marriago Act, twclvo months' imprisonment; William Woolley. theft, twelve mofttlis!' imprisonment,, and, at the termination of tho period, to be . treated as an habi-' tual criminal; John Whitford, bigamy, twelve months' imprisonment j George Finlay, forgery, "nine months' imprisonment; Samuel Richard Carr, .theft, three montl--' imprisonment; Gerald O'Hare, forger.yj _.A- months' imprisonment. . Thomas Nesbitt, arraigned on a chargo of theft, was'found not guilty.
: Dunedin, August 16. The criminal eittings of tho Supreme Court opened to-day. Mr. Justice Williams, in charging tho Grand Jury, referred to .tho lightness of tho calendar. The following Bcntences were passed :—Alfred Genet,.alias Jonkons (an old offender), for theft of a basket from a- railway platform, eleven', months' imprisonment; David Rae, assault,. fifteen months; Henry Crofton, breaking and entering and theft, twelve months i William M'Tier was found not guilty of falsifying an. order for the payment of moi'ey to himself, and was discharged. Court . criminal sessions opened this morning.. Mr. Justice Edwards, ' in his charge to the Grand Jury, said there were only twenty-six caees to bo dealt with,' but no fewer than eight were charges agoinet men for alleged offences, against the opposite sex. With respect to the charge of man. slanghter against a tram conductor, his Hononr said that if tho person charged with a duty caused death by negligence of that duty he : was guilty of manslaughter. BURGLARS FOILED. • • Auckland, August 16. ■Two men broke into the Criterion Hotel, Albert, Street, on Saturday night, evidently intending to force, the safe, but desisted on one or both being severely, injured, when breaking a glass door protected by an iucc-r covering of wirornetting..
