■ I • ' ■" NOTES ON THE RACINC,

■ . (From Our Own Correspondent. 'The first event saw Gleiigariff go out a very hot order, but,' though 'he won, his winning did .not justify his position in the ■ market. Cochrane redo him a clever race, and'after Deerslayer had tipped out at thesod 'wall, and ; nearly brought down the favourite, the race looked in his keeping, but Gammon and 'Barney then put in claims, and. in a really good finish up the straight, Cochrane drove the Hawcra horse home by a cimpleof -lengths." Gammon was only a head in , front of Barney. : Jockeys Cahill and Ousdfn, the riders of Deersl.iyer and .Stormy Petrel,; n-ero riot iiijureil by their falls. ■

■ Though, they slackened somewhat in their .allegiance, .the public again sent North Head out", favourite in the Heathcote Handicap, while good money, was forthcoming for Sweet ■Angeltis, Bonny Glen, and' Iranui. Stratagom and. Bonny Glen were 'quickest to begin, but thei-fprimui sopn,jotirfid-,,:,,while Sweet Angelus and: All. Guns led from Boiiny Glen. Tho favourite had been lying in fourth position; .'but,,.at tho turn, ho went up. • His effort>-.was-'short-lived, as Brniiy Glen putiin a.iHin that sotfled everything. Sweet Anißclns was just in'front , .-of Stratagem. The ifavourito was , fourth, and-Iranui fifth. .

...; Pdlyantlwis carried most. ■ of : the public 'money;in the Hack Hurdles, which resulted in a good race. At. the first fence Slanoy, Lapland, and Farley Grove were in • the lead, but at Cutt3's', Slaney banged through the obstacle, and wont back about 20 lengths. Ho caught his field again at the straight entrance, but again made a faulty jump. However, to tho general surprise of the public, ho 'answered A. Julian's call in 'a.remarkable,, manner, and, after dropping back into fourth, position, -he came ngain, anil won by several lengths. A. Julian got a good reception on returning to scale. Stepenfoldt Lroko his leg after landing over the second hurdle, and it was only with the greatest difficulty that his rider, got him back to the paddock. :

The big hurdles was an interesting raco to watch. Ben Jonson was most in demand, and ulion came ■ Sou thorn ' Cross, ■ Compass, and Scottji 'Kairoma led in tho early stages, but he',wns.quickly dono with, and after pulling up it. was found, that he was bleeding badly. Scotty and Bpn Jon3on singled themselves out at- the sfa-furlong 'post, and tho St. Lcger horse- won hy,a couple of lengths. Snip 'was the last to finish.

■The' Lincoln Steeplechase was tho first country event of the meeting in which all the contestants cleared the courap. Wairaka led for tho first two miles, when Nndador and El. , Dorado went to the front. El Dorado won comfortably at the finish ' from' the National winner, ■ with'; Wairaka closo-mi Eurua, who was favourite, was the.last .to finish.' . : .

■ King Pest was last into the straight in the Redcliffs Handicap; but ho finished with a phenomenal run, and won by two lengths. Eaglestone showed a lot of paco' for fivo.furlongs; but he stopped badly'at tho finish. Ringdove was favourite and finished last, with Whistlecraft who'was second favourite.

Hatch, had tho mount on Longner in the Selwyn Handicap, and somo spirited speciikitjdu' was indulged'in on his mount.- Others to carry money were Federal .and Prim. Los Angelos was comparatively neglected on the course, but a big commission was worked for him in Wellington. Federal, broke ■ tho line .flrstj.and with Sea King led to. the turn, with Longnor next. At the entrance to tho straight the' latter passed the leaders, but was then- challenged .by Los /Angelos and Prim..; Los Angelos won comfortably, and Loiigner just managed to finish in front of Prim.'. ' \ ■" ' ■•.■■■■ ..The Hunters' Plate was generally voted a good thing for Tyrannic, and ho eventually won,' though only after a very hard)finish with Blytheboy and Seadog. It was intended to start Pallada .in-this, race, but .through an oversicht* his certificate- was not forthcoming, and he had to he withdrawn. , Glengariff was sold prior to the Hunt Club Cup to a Timaru sportsman. Mr. W. Young received 200 guineas and half tho stakn. It is'rumoured, too, that El Dorado was also sold prior to tho Lincoln Steeples, for 500 guineas, and Messrs. Elworthy'are mentioned as tho purchasers. •• . . i '.-. ■ .' ■ •

Dsrragh against the decision of the Auckland Metropolitan Committee- disqualifying him for life in connection with the running of the horso Tauriki at tho Takapuna Jockey Club's Winter meeting, 1908, which decision varied a decision of tho Takapuna Jockey Club disqualifying Darragh during the pleasure of the club: —"Although all the circumstances connected with tho running of tho maro Taiirilci aro exceeding!j' susjiicious, and tho evidence most contradictory and unsatisfactory, the judges arc riot absolutely satisfied that a case- of ring-;ing-in has been established, and thereforo leave this question open for further investigation by tho Auckland Metropolitan Committee- or tho Takapuna Jockey Club, if .'fresh evidence should bo forthcoming. Assuming, however, that the maro, which ran at Avondale, Takapuna, and Ellerslio under the name of Tauriki, was tho chestnut maro by St. Crispin, from a Freedom mare, alleged to havo been, bred by S. Darragh, wo aro 'satisfied-that, though entered and -raced in the name of J., Grant, she never ceased to bo the property of S. Darragh, and .that she was raced 'throughout , in his' interest, arid in .violation of tho Rules of Racing." The judges express dissatisfaction regarding' tho , information supplied by both J. Grant and S. Darragh during the inquiry, and'proceed: "We hereby disqualify the said S: Darragh, and tho mare Tauriki, for a term of-livo iyears, from May 14, IOQiX As J.
