Messena,. of Foxtori, to-day, cabled to Mr. 'Coombes, of the "Sydney- Referee.'' withdrawing'the stake deposited:': for tne. sculling . match between Whelch and Day, on the Manawatu River,' as it was not covered in time. Mr. Messena)in conjunction with another Foxton sportsman, has decided, : instead, to inaugurate an annual'international sculling haindicap on the 'Long- Reach on the Manawatu 7 River,, three and a" half miles above Foxton, and-will put up two hundred pounds iiv .stakes, to which will .be,, added twenty pot-cent;, of'the ."gate" money. This' gate) money.' is riot, to exceed two shillings and sixpence per head, and the arrangements made with ( Vehicle proprietors is" that the fare qut t to the scene of the race '(to which there is a. good, road) shall hot. exceed two shillings'and sixpanco. ; The courso, which is to be visited <by Arnst,on 'August, 19, . is , straight. ■,'dead water, with level banks four feet-high, permitting' an uninterrupted: view.' The proposal IS'to hold the event-in the'first week in 1 December, if the tide suits. The preliminary heads' are to be rowed on Wednesday, and tho semi-finals ' and : finals on Friday; other sports'occupying Thursday.; It is'understood that "Dick ' ; Arnst, and probably,' also his brother, as-well ..as .Fo'gwell, Pearce, \Vhelch, Day,-and (it is hoped) Webb will tak'e ipart. Foxton'.-is easily accessible, by rail arid, road from the' Main' Trunk' arid other lines- at Palmerstom and the course proposed is probably the finest in the world.
