The' temperature reached 15 degrees beloiV zero. . • THt.DUKE'S RECORD. The Duke of Abruzzi, scientist, explorer, aeronaut, sportsman, .aiid litterateur, in 1897 ascended Mount Elias, in. Alaska, the highest peak, in the Rockies, 18,000 ft. high, he and his .party being the first to scale tlint mountain. In 1006 he was again a pioneer mountaineer ;in Central Africa, ascending tho topmost height of the Rinvenzori range. His alleged engagement to Miss Katheriue Elkins, of New York, created a society sensation in-1805. In 1900 he :fieat Nansen's North Polar record, and for a while held the Farthest Northing, but in 1906 Commander Peary took the honour, reaching 87deg. 6mm.,' or little more than 200 miles from tho Pole.' Karakoram expedition among the mountains bordering Cashmere .ascended a 'height of 20,000 ft., which he named Crystal Peak, and another peak about 23,000 ft;- which he named 1 Pioneer Peak.
Godwin-Austen, where the Duke of Abruzzi attained his 24,600 ft., is 28,265 ft. high, and is the highest known summit in the world,'except Mount Everest (23,002 ft.), also in the Himalayas. . . ' . . ■
