(From Our Special Reporter.) . -6 HUTT COUNTY COUNCIL. Tho monthly 1 meeting of the Hutt County Council was licltl yesterday, there being present: Councillors M. W. Welch, chairman. Lynch, Galloway, Whitema-n, Edwards, and Wakeham. _ „ •The County Inspector, Mr. J. W. Cudby, reported that the west road from Trenthaui into tho Epuni Biding had been metalled, also portions of tho Alcatarawa Road. "With the exception of a littlo to be done in the AVainui-o-raata, no more metal will be put down tins season. t The slips that occupied during, the heavy rains recently have all been cleared away, and the damage done repaired. As there-are indications of the river eating into the road at tho gorge, it would be advisable to erect a crate about 25 feet long at this point. The Moonshine- Judgeford deviation has been completed at .slightly above the estimate, but under that of the lowest tenderer for the .work. The metalling of the Wainuwwnata Road is m hand, and the worst parts of the hill completed, The stone the council has been getting for the repairs to the hill has cost over 10s. per yard, making the work very costly. The county s quarry, which has just been opened near th 6 Waimn School, lias the appearance of turning out metal fairly well. This metal will cost about half 'the present price pajd. The council was recommended to place its seal on the plans of the road carried out b.v Mr. Troup at Plimmerton, as the work has been carried out very satisfactorily. The report was adopted. In reference to tho road between Pukerua and Pliinmorton, it was decided to, adopt th 6 route over the old Maori track, as-reviewed last Saturday by the councillors, instead ofthe road recently surveyed. . ■ Complaints concerning a ranger in the Horokiwi Riding were received, and it was decided to communicate with that officer on | the subject. The question of road deviation and ex* change from the Fruitgrowers' Block, Reikorangi, was referred to the Land Board. The penny rate for the county was formally struck for the coming . Accounts amounting to £707,25. sd. were passed for payment. JOTTINGS. A very painful accident occurred at Belmont a few'days ago. The victim was the six-year-old son of- Mr. R. Walker, a draughtsman in the Public Works Department. The little boy was walking home behind a horse, when the animal kicked out, arid struck him on the side, throwing him to the ground. The rider dismounted, and it was found that severe injuries had been inflicted. The lad was conveycd-to his home, where Drs. Hector and-Ross performed an operation. The little sufferer is ■ progressing -as well as can be expected, but he-is by 110 means out of dagger yet. Two co/ses of scarlet fever and two of diphtheria, are reported from Koro Ivoro. Building seems to have been very sbek in Petone 'during tho past month, only four •permits for tho ercction of new buildings Wingbeen issued by the borough council. Tho estimated value of the buildings is only £415. . The district convention of the. W.C.T.TJ. will commence this morning at Alicetown. A meeting will be held in the evening, when, addresses will be delivered. The Petone borough engineer has reported that the cost of erecting open baths on the Petone Beach would bo £2242; The council decided not to do anything in the matter, at present. . Mr. J. . J. Smith has been appointed, out of G2 applicants, to the position of caretaker of tlie Petone Recreation Ground, vice Mr. M/Aulay, resigned. _ Mr. Carter, of. tho. Government Railway station staff, is at present relieving at the Petoiio Station.
