PALMERSTON DAY BY DAY.
(By, Telceropb;~Bpeclar OorroaDondout.i Palmerston, August .10. The Referees'. Association held an inquiry last evening in connection with an anonymous letter received by the captain or the Feilding Club, in which allegations were ;made.-against the referee appointed for the recent match with Kia Toa. After - discussing the matter, and passing certain resoiutio'ns,' it' was decided to hold another meeting on Monday evening. .-- . The Rangitane Maoris are following the lead of their Wairarapa brethren in decid; • ing to present an address to the Hon. James Carroll in honour of his being the -first member of his race to hold the highest position in Parliament. The date has not been decided on, but it is expected that the Hon. A T. Ngata and Dr. Buck, M.P., will be present at a meeting of. the tribe, to be held "to-morrow, to make the necessary. arrarigements. '•••'.•■ '*■ ' At a meeting, of the Borough Council last night,' a motion was passed thanking SubInspector O'Donovanfor police services rendered in' protecting the works and. property of the borough. The Mayor explained that the inspector had so arranged the work of the police, that they whld, keep an eye on the Square, and thus any damage done, to the Square gardens could be detected.' Residents of Stoney Creek declare that they have seen a strange light' travelling, east and west at about 25 miles an hour •during the past two or three nights. A deputation, from, the College Street, School' Committee,, comprising Messrs. ;W. Stubbs, and J. B. Gerrand, waited on the Hon. G. Fowkls (Minister for Education) on his way from Napier to Wellington.. Mr. Stubbs stated that, tho infant classroom at the ' College Street School - had become very badly overcrowded. The room was originally intended to accommodate eighty children, but it had now over a' hundred and sixty. The committee had made application to the Wanganui Education Board for a grant to enable the room to be enlarged, but had been told tbait the board had no funds. Mr. Fowlds, in replying, said that he- had not personally heard anything about tho matter. Just at present they were only dealing with the, most-urgent cases, and the officers of the Department, not knowing all the circumstances, had doubtless concluded that tho case was not urgent. Before doing anything, he would havo to be satisfied that the accommodation in other schools in the town wa3 also insufficient, because it sometimes happened that a popular teacher drew away children from other schools. One school became congested while tho others had plenty of room. • Captains Peach' and Palmer wore busy yesterday, furthering the interests of the coming military tournament. They interviewed tho Hon. G. Fowlds and Hon. T. Mackenzie on various matters, while his Excellency the Governor was also waited oh with an invitation' to bo present at the tournament.
