DEBATING TOURNAMENT.
: THE SECOND' BOUND. The second round of the' fifth'annual tournament of the Wellington Provincial Literary and Debating Societies' Union .took .placo last evening. • The subject of the debates was: "That the Termination of the Present AngloJapanese Alliance is in tho best interests of the British Empire." St. Anne's met Taranaki Street tho former's club rooms. St. Anne's urged the affirmative .of the motion, and Taranaki Street the negative. The teams were as follow:—St. Anne's: Messrs. E. J. Eitzgibbon,. D. Butler, and D. MoriaVtys Taranaki Street: Messrs. J. R. Burley, H. J. Harris, and El Cummirig. The speoches. were 6f a good' standard, St. Anne's being awarded the victory by 233 points to 217. Mr. J. AV. Black was judge. Tho Brooklyn Baptist Society debated against St. Hilda's (island Bay), at Brooklyn. The teams were:—Brooklyn: Messrs. E. J. Luke, T. Thompson, and Dr. A. E. Cattzenst St. Hilda's: Messrs. A. H. Hindmarsh, N. Manhjre,' and E. Borcock, The decision was given, by a small innvgin, for Brooklyn, who argued that the alliance should not be continued.'. The judgo was Mr. J. W. Hclliwell: Tho debate between tho Catholic Young Men's Club and the Karori Club had to be postponed owing to tho indisposition' of the judge, Mr. Mr. Glanville Hunt. The debate will take place at tho Botiloott Street Hall on, Friday ovonrnc.
