HUTT AND PETONE NEWS.
1 (From" Our Special Beporter.) PETONE BEACH. . ' . ; A POPULAR "PARADE. . * The perfect weather of yesterday had the effect of bringing about a couple of hundred residents of Petone and the neighbourhood down to that magnificent,, though practically unknown scenic resort, Petone Beach ana Esplanade. TUo conditions for an outing on the beach could not have been abetter. The sun was warm, the sea was still as a lake, the tide was on the ebb, and the gentlest. of gentle breeze's blew from the north. Family, parties,, yachting and boating enthusiasts, the young and old of both 1 sexes, and innumerable children were' to be seen on pleasure bent or paddling in the surf." A pair of' enterprising Lower Hutt bon-vivants, triumphing over local antipathies, have secured a cottage on the esplanade for a :few weeks, and they and their cottage made 'a little bit in yestei'day's picture—an effective bit, too.
The pity of it is that more, is not known of the beauties of the beach—ami- the scenery visible from it. There seems to be no reason why Wellington people should require to go so far as Napier, when they have such a possession at .hand. . Perhaps it is because the beach is so .easily available that its pretty spots are not more generally explored,, but it is to'be feared that most of the blame-is laid at the doors of local residents, who possibly do not fully realise'tho'value of their asset. There is reason for congratulation in the fact that the Petone Scenery Preservation Society is taking action'with respect to this charming resort. '■.'■■ .' • •'■•-.
