In addition to the names previously cabled, those saved from the wrecked linor Maori include the following: Yatcs, steward; Munns, seaman; Brown, greaser; and Holmes and Milton, firemen. (Reo. August 8, 5.5 p.m.) ■ London, August 7. Some fishermen yesterday morning detected twelve men clinging to the Maori's mast tops. They succeeded in establishing communication, despite- the enormous waves breaking over tho wreck. Two were saved, two others being drowned while coming ashore. ■ Rocket communication was established by the evening, and food and brandy were' sent td the wreck. There is a fair prospect of rescuing the other eight. The fishermen are displaying great heroism. . . ■. ■ . '.. The Maori is in deep water, and her back is broken. ' ■ The "Daily Mail" correspondent in a later message states that.the Maori was wrecked thirty yards from, a rockbound coast in an inaccessible position. When the boats left the ship twelve men were still asleep below, not being aware that a disaster had occurred. They threw a lino ashore, and the engineer (Middloton) and a fireman (O'Brien) crawled to land with difficulty. Two were drowned in attempting to do the samo. -.- • '
. The remainder took refuge in the rigging, where they remained for 48 hours, being frt quently drenched with t])e heavy seas. The rocket apparatus throw tho rope ashorp. _ . On Saturday morniug the remaining eight were dragged ashore through a tremendous sea. . _ ' . ■ The boatswain (George Stewart, ■ a native of Lyttclton) states. that he cut free two boats, and when they were filled he thought that he himself was tho last to leave with the third boat, not knowing that others were below. .Tho men in his boat pulled desperptely, occasionally ..sighting the other two boats. At dawn a'jagged coast was revealed, and they steered for a patch of, sand. , The boat, however, struck a rook and was overturned. . He started to swim ashore, and rescued' Stillwol|: r and Melon, the latter weighing 18 stono. . • . ■ Twenty-one out of 53 on board have heen saved. .. . ■ . '/■:'.
