THE NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIPS.' The leading golfers of: the Dominion will gather in strong forco oii the historic slopes of One Treo Hill next month, to contest the amateur and open championships of New Zealand (says tho Auckland "Herald"). Tho 'Auckland Golf Club, m whose hands tho 1 arranging of tho championship meeting 1 rests, anticipate u large influx of devotees of this increasingly popular winter pastimo. The championships will bo doe'ded on tho Cornwall Park links, tho dates for decision being set dowji as from Monday, September 13, to Saturday. September 18. The piogramme has just boon issued bv tho Auckland club, tho events boiug as follow:— Amateur Championship of New Zealand: Two qualifying, rounds (stroke play), tho 32 players reluming tho best scores to play off by match play ovor 18 holes, final being 38 holes. AVinner mid runner-up will each receivo a trophy in addition to tho gold and silver medals presented by tho New Zealand Golf Council. Winner will also be considered tho winner of the Challonge Cup. Tlio oup will.be handed to the olub of which tho winner is a member, and will be held by that club until tho next championship mooting. , Open Championship of New Zealand: Four rounds of medal play. Open to any professional or amateur. Prizes, £20, £10, and £5, for tho first, secondhand third playcis. Should an amateur secure a place no will receive a trophy. - Professional Match:. Over IS'holes, match play. Open'to any professional in New Zealnftd'Or elsewhere, prize, £10; second prize, £2. This match wjll not bo played unless thoro are six entries.
Inter-club Challenge Vase; Presented by Mr. E. D. O'Rorke, to be held by tho winning club until next championship meeting. Teams of (out players to represent each club. The aggregate gross score of each team in tccond qualifying round of event No. 1 \vill decide tho event.
Othor events -include a bogey handicap, foursome bogey match (handicap), medal handicap (to bo played concunently with the two qualifying rounds for tho amateur championship), driving competition, and app'roacmng and putting competition* Putting competitions will boTield daily, a prize boing given to the winner each day, and a special prize to the player returning tho best card during tho week. Tho general conditions governing tlie tournament state that , entries will only bo recoived through clnb secretaries, and will closo at Auckland on Saturday, September Jl» with Mr. W. Wallace Bruce, hon. secretary, Svranson, Street, Auckland. During their stay in Auckland tho visiting competing goiters will be tho guosts of the Auckland Golf Club. They will be convoyed as such to tho links by tram free of charge. Tickets -will bo supplied by tho secretary on application. Tho visitois wu> bo entertained at tho Northern Club to din,nor on the Saturday evening by tho Au-.k-land Golf Olub. Ariangements will be made hy which luncheon and afternoon tea may bo obtained at tho club house during the tournament.
