NAPIER WOOL TRADE.
WILL IT BE DIVESTED TO • WELLINGTON. . . (Br ToICCr&DIi.-EDeolal GortosDondenM Napier, August 5. The statement made by Mr. 1 , ,. Wilford, Chairman of the Wellington Harbour Boardi regarding tho diversion of Hawke'e Day wool to Wellington, was referred by your Correspondent to-day to somo of the principals of the stock and station agency firms in town,
who agreed that there was no justification for the assertion. Some of. the g'entlonieii interviewed wont the length; 'of Baying that the statement was ridiculous." From what could bo gathered, it would appear that the. Main Trunk lino will have absolutely no elfect on the Nnpicr wool sales* but tho purchase of the Wanawatu Hue by tho Government will probably improve matters here. It will bo remombered that before the Government purchased the Manawatu lino, a differential rato operated in favour of Wellington, and a riuinbor of wool growers at the southern end of Hawke's Bay availed themselves of it. Under the new scale of rates, these growers will probably find it t> their advantage io send their wool to Kspier. Last year a little Gisborne wool found its wa£ to the local sales, nncl;' with good prices offering, it is probable that furtlor supplies may be expected from the northern ond of tho east coast. At' present Gisborao wool is shipped direct Home. According to the brokers.ncre, it is difficult .to'know why Hawko's Bay wool should gd to Wellington. Buyers are always assured of a good catalogue hero, and it is also pointed out that the majority of Hawko's Bay wool-groivera do thoir business through Napier morcantilo firms, and will naturally , sell thoir Wool through tho agency with which they are connected. . . ■ ' ■ ■..■•
