ANNUAL SMOKE CONCERT. Tho twelfth annual smoke concert of the livil Servico Killes was held last evening in inoad's Rooms, Cuba Street. Captain Marshall ras in the chair, and the company mustered in ood numbers. Tho Hon. Dr. Fintflay (honorary aptain) tendered an apology lor noil-attend-In replying to tho toast of "The Ministry proposed by tho chairman), the Hon. D. Duddo irew attention to what ho. termed the "butter .ides" of volunteering. Ho himself had served or seven years in an Imperial defence corps, it a time- when conveniences for travel, wcro lot readily obtainable. He belonged .to a lounty corns, and had to walk somo miles to parade. lie admired the man who went :hrough his volunteering with credit, and obtained his long service medal, but lie was also pleased to meet young men in the corps with high aspirations. ;It was gratifying to note that this year the roll number of the defence forces was greater than ever before.. People, wero apt to say that volunteering and defence work were falling into tlio background, but the statistics showed that there-was progress as far as numbers v;ero concerned. (Applause.) As for tho future, it was in the lap of : the gods. The Prime Minister was now attending an Imperial Conference sitting ill London, and ho, was glad to see that tho spontaneous offer of assistance to the Navy made by Dominion had been favourably, commented on in tho Old Land by both political parties.
