" . ■■■ . ■ '/■; • ' WELLINGTON DEFEAT MANAWATH.' (By Telcgrapli.-Spocial Correspondent.! • Palmerston North, August 1. ' On paper it looked as though the Manawatu Golf Glub had a good chance of making amends for the severe beating which they sustained from the Wellington Golf Club on the'occasion of the' last visit to.Trenthnni, but on Saturday the players of the latter club were again just too good, and ended winners by 31. Duncan was in better form tban\ho has been/showing during the week, and put down the Manawatu champion, A. Barraud, though the latter 1 hold on gamely, and it required the 16 holes to : settle the match. Abbott and .Prydei, as usual, played a great game, and, though Abbott put in a score of 80, Pryde was the winner by 8 up. Walter Strang, maintained his reputation as a Consistent winner, and put' down 0. Gore,/ whilo v his . eldor brother (who' has just recovered from a severe illness) did very, well to halve hjs match with W. Reid. Nobody played a better game for.the Wellington side, than James C. Coatea,. .and-.it was hard that he should have struck an opponent who was really rather above:his true form, and have to lower his colours. Somersmg of a surprise 1 was caused by K. Duncan. With a broken finger and a bruised leg, it wasthought that he would falla certain victim to, Percy M'Hardy, the Maiiawatu captain, but one never knows when he has "Ken," and he gave an astonishing exhibition. The quiet manner in which the ex-amateur champion put down four players on Friday leads one to think'' that- he will hold his own against Clements, the professional New Zealand champion, in the match that is to.be played shortly. .'But, all tbe same, Duncan Is a long way off his real forrn. In his round in the match his scjore was 79. Tho following are results:— ' A. Duncan (1) v; A. Barraud (0); A. Y. Abbott (0) v. D. Pryde (1); W. Reid (0) v. A. String (1); C. Goto (0) v. W. Strang'(l); R. W. Kilsby (1) v. Varman (0); V. Dalziell (1J) v. H. Cooper (0); P. C. Freeth (1) v. L. Seifert (0); K? Duncan (1) v. P. M'Hardy (0); H. FroSt (1) v. A. Stedman (0) : J. C. Coates ■(}):; v. L. A. Abraham (1); totals, 61—3. " " . ; . ; Although nearly an inch of rain fell during Friday night and the downpour did not coaso till nearly '12 o'clock on Saturday, tho links were in perfect order. With tile exception of three holes, one coula'hardly have told that it had been raining. . ■ ■ A CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP. ; . IBy Teleeraph.—Press Association.) Christchurcb, July 31.
