VICTORIA COLLEGE.
APPEAL BY THE COUNCm. . The Victoria College' Council, in an appeal to the public,; states that the college urgently needs increased accommodation. Ton years ago there wero 115 students,, today there are.46l, attending lectures. .The staff during, the same period has increased from 4 professors and 2 lecturers to 10 professors, 3 lecturers, and 6 assistants. The rapid increase in the number of the students and of the staff has rendered tho existing building quite inadequate to tho present needs of the college. The number of class rooms is inadequate, tho classes aro congested, there is no office accommodation. The-library;-which is justly appreciated and greatly used by tho students, and.which is being continually increased by generous prirvato donations, and by an annual - appropriation ( out of the collcgo funds, will shortly have sufficient room neither for tho books nor for the readers. The teaching of the sciences, whothor, biological or physical, necessitates the..provision of an efficient museum, the lack of which has for some timo been keenly felt:'. -■.■■'■. : ■'.-.; Tho most irrg«nt immediate necessity is tho erection of the largo class rooms. For tliis purpose the Government has promised a subsidy of £2 for every £1 of voluntary contributions, on condition that the' work is begun without delay'*''and that tho limit of the Government's liability is £2000. Tho council is, therefore, anxious to raiso tho sum of £1000, and is appealing for, help to,the people of the district, which is served by tho college. This district comprises the provincial distnets of Wellington, Nelson, ffostland, . Marl- . lioiough, Hawko'e Bay,- and Taranaki.
