OUR TELEPHONE EXCHANGE.
Sir,—l rsnd .a letter 6ignod by "Capo Gooseberry" in The Dominion' last Saturday, ro tho above matter. I consider that your first correspondent "Wire In," whoso remarks I also perused, knew what 110 was talking about moro than; the "Gooseberry" chap appears to do.. It is indeed timo that' Eomothini; wns dono ro the Toleplwne Exoliango's dilatory manner in responding to rings., Tho public aro. often forced to take strong exception to.it, and.no wonder I ■I' commend "Wire ln's" letter, and hojic tho matter will recoivo the prompt attention it merits. In the. meantime, "Cape Goose-. bprry" (and friends of his) should not rush into- print oil tho incomploto evidence tJicy possess' ro the Telephone 'Etfchango _ girls' kliosyncracies. My '.own experienoo is ccr-, tainly on'a par with that of "Wire In," but. ho. treats the matter too facetiously.! Personally,' I believe that "Capo Gooseberry" is only voicing sentiments that aro tho result of lack of experience and knowledge of .tho matter discussed, when ho indites communications to the editor of' Tiif. Dominion re-our ; ; Telephone Exchange.—l am, etc.". \ " . : . / V' PETER WEST. ; Wellington, July . 27/ 1009!, : .
' Sir,—l havo carefully read' the epistle lof "Capo Goosebcriy" in Tin*. Dominion of Saturday/ July 24, 1 and thoroughly agree' with what ho says regarding subscribers having to wait a long time for a number,-when they ,iiso bad languago over the wire to the telephone girls. He 'has. no. right, however, to gratuitously assume or infer by innuendo that "Wiro In" .is in-tho habit of "cussing" into -tho 'phone r.t tho Excbango girls. It is doprecablo that ho should have taken, this course at all. , But by so doing—in factj by all his letter—lie simply begs tho question, and drags a red herring across tho trail—tho usual subterfuge of him who knowcth not whereof ho: speaks. . Naturally', any woman —be she a ; society lady or a 'phone girlwould most, strenuously object to any socalled "man!.' using .had languago in her presence (or her earl).- • Fortunately, I am unacquainted with persons, who follows this coursetliny arc not' numbered among- the' personal friends of ''the -writer," however, many of them may claim comradeship with "C.G." I should 'have'Hoped'that'no telephono" subscriber: would, bo i cad. enough to .blaspheme at tli'o ; girls, even -though they, may keep one waiting a -long timo -for a response.' But all this has, 1 after all; nothing whatever _to do with tho question, for few men in Wellington forgot "themselves as . "C.G.'s" friends must do. It is useless :,and..':only''.,wasting The Dominion's valuable', spaco .to "enter, upon an idle a question of interest and importance.'with a., man who fences with tho; real.cau'so and its-potentiali-ties as "Cape 'Goosobe'rry" . done rather badly; at .that. Ho has not disproved my contention' that Subscribers are kept waiting a long time,. sometimes for an answer by tho Exchange (putting his linguistic abilities to one, side),' so I must leave tho issue where, it-ended with my, first letter on tho subject, "Oanc'GoosoWrv" having unfortunately :for, the public givon us no enlightenment at, all;— 1 am,, etc.,. ; ' > ••• WIRE IN. .
