WATER-LOGGED BUTTER.
MOTION BY WELLINGTON MERr CHANTS. The Dairy'Producc Committee of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce has a schenie to checkmate tlio over-watering of New Zealand butter foY.-export. It lias passed tho following resolution: — '' ■ "With a view of re-establishing the reputation of New Zealand butter on tho English market and protecting'the interests of .oversea buyers, in the opinion of this meeting .it is desirable that eacl) consignment of butter forwarded to grading store for export be subjected - to the strictest possiblo analysis by the Dairying Department, to determine; the moisture content, and that each factory bo notified at tho beginning of tho manufacturing season that the penalties of the Dairy Industry Act, 1908, will be 'strictly enforced, and that the Government be urged to-give effect to the above proposals in tTie interests of the industry by prosecuting for any breach of the said Act." '
Persistent statements are made that the outcry against moisture in New Zealand butter, 'this season has been engineered by certain New Zealand butter operators -whose motive is to lower values for the 'bargaining season noiv shortly due. It appears difficult to credit these statements in view of tlib re-, cent references to tho question in the reports of Homo firms, in tho trade journal, "Grocer," and ill tlie High Commissioner's statement that a question on the subject was to bo asked in tho British House of Parliament".
