' • / SUDDEN DEATH. An inquiry into the death of, Jame3 Maoartney MitcbeU, who ; wasiound w a dying condition in a yard, at 161 lngestre_ Street, i on Monday afternoon, was held by Dr. M'Arthur, S.M., district ooroner, yesterday m Sf Trethowan Mitchell testified that she | was the widow of the deceased, but had been livinE apart from him by mutual/ consent. She saw deceased lost on Saturday evening, July 17. at his lodgings, 161 Ingestre Street. He seemed- very well then, but was evidently suffering from the effects of alcohol. Wncss spoke to him for a few moments, and asked hm if she could do anything for him, which he replied "No. ,She did not see him after that. Deceased was a stonemason. 52 years of age, and had been carried 14 years. He was in the hospital at New Year s time suffering-from the effects of drmk. : Dr. Mackin, who,was called in, stated that ' the man was dead on his arrival. Mtxt hearing the history of the case, ho had come to the conclusion that the immediate caute of death was heart failure, probably accelersided with the deceased testified to todmg deceased on the ground at tkeback He asked him what., he was : doing there. Deceased said; something, but he could not say what it was. He picked him "P. J"™ took him inside, but when about to place him in a chair the deceased ~ .. A verdict of death from heart accentuated by congestion of the lungs wa returned. . .
RIDING ON THE COWCATCHER. (By Telceraph.—Press Association.) 5 Oamaru, July 20. A painful accident happenwl to a railway shunter named H. S. Hungorford this morning on Holmes's Wharf. He was riding on the cowcatoher of a shunting cngiHG) w by some means his foot slipped and ho was dragged under the engine, sustaining a nocture of the left leg and a Severe flesii wound on the right.-The Fon^PP 1 ?f the Westinghouse brake prevetlted a more distressing accident. : . •
gelignite. Talhapo, July 20.- ■ Word has just been received here that Mr. Joseph Gibson,. J : P.„ a togUy-rcspected ironmonger at Ractihj, was killed this morning by an explosion of gelignite.
