In the Arbitration Court to-day, \in th« Kinpaka coal-minera' dispute,' Mr. Manning, socreiary of the Federated Coal-, miners' Union, urged that wages should, bo'' increased all round,, and brought into,lino with wages elsewhere. Sinoe the passing of the Arbitration Act, he asserted'that, the minimum wage had como to' be looked upon as the maximum, and workers no longer had a right to strike. Mr. Justice Sim interjected: If you cancel your registration you' can strike. Mr. Manning: 1' understood that in an industry to which an; award would apply we should' bo liable if we struck. Tho Judge: Not at' all. ,If youiare'not registered you can strike. '

To compensate tho licensees of the fiv« city hotels recently closed through thf carrying of the Reduction vote, the Ancfc' land Liconscd .'Victuallers'- Association, r» cently started a subscription-list amongst tho trade, with the result that'nearly £1000 has been donated. Tho amount will Jbb distributed at a gathering at the Chamber of Commerce next Tuesday.:

' At the annual- meeting of tho New Zealand Axemen's Association last night, the Toport stated that the attendance of the 1 general public ! at the last carnival created a fresh\nooord. There has been a' falling- , off in the number of axemen's licenses b-\ sued by ths association during the year, tributed to the closing down of a number of mills throughout tho Dominion. Tho net profits for tho year amounted to £73 10a. 9d., and the balance of'assits over liabilities was £335 19s. 9d., the whole of which, excepting £4 75.'6 d., is represented by aotual cash, tho a&soaation consequently''be- \. ing in .an excellent position. The sum of ' £292 was paid,in prize-money, and the total expenditure was £603 18s. 10d.' The executive will meet .next ,week to draw up the I programme for the next carnival. ' NEW ROMAN CATHOLIC HICH SCHOOL. Auckland, July 20. A new Roman Catholic High School o» Convent is shortly to be established in Auckland by tho Parisian Order of Nuns, known as the Sisters of tho Sacred Heart, the proposal having been sanctioned by Bishop Lenihan. The-Rev.- Mother Smith, of Sydney; and the Rev, Mother Haydon, of Wellington, aj-e making tho necessary arrangements. Tho former lady: is now in Auckland, and has negotiations-well in band for the purchase of a suitable bonding and area of gronnd for the new establishment. It is expected that it will be opened about the first week in October. The Sisters of the Sacred Heart have already two successful high schools in the Dominion, one at Island Bay, Wellington, and the other at Timara. PRISONERS SENTENCED. ' ' Auckland, July 20. Several prisoners - were sentenced at the Supreme, Court this afternoon. Bertie Lyons, alias Harry Davis, on three charges of forgery and uttering, one charge of theft'from a dwelling, and one charge of theft was sentenced, to three years' imprisonment on each charge, the sentences to be concurrent. Rangi Weremu, a young s Maori, • who hatl been convicted-of uttering a forged • cheqna * at Whangaroa, was sent to gaol for six months with hard labour. George Sullivan, who pleaded- guilty to a charge of forgery ■ and uttering at Helensville, was sent to gaol-for two years with hard labour. Charles Geddes, old man, for forgery, and uttering, 1 three 'years' hard labour and declared an habitoal criminal. POLICEMAN AND, PRISONER., ■ Dunedin, July 19. At tie Police Court, to-day Michael Coleman was committed for trial on a charge oi assaulting Constable Daubney so as to oanac ; him actual bodily harm. ■ Evidence for tlhe prosecution was to the effect that on July 2 the constable was attempting to arrest accused ■ on a charge of using oosceno language, when the latter stabbed him twice • about the head. On the charge of using obsoene language, accused was remanded . until the-'other cnargo had been dealt with by the Supreme Court. COAL OUTPOT. " Westport, July 19. Last week's coal output from Westport constituted a -record, being 18,575' tons 3 cwt., as against 18,461 tons 3 cwt., the previous, best record, established in the week ending July 3. Details are as follow:—West- , port Coal Company, 15,483 tons;. WestportrStockton Company, 1711 tons 8 cwt.; Seadonville State mine, 1380, tons 15 cwt. The Italian barque Caraociolo, bound froa New Caledonia to a European port, with a: cargo of nickel ore, put into Auckland thil afternoon.
