MASTERTON

Some months ago, Dr. ;W. Hosking, of Masterton, offered £500 to tho Mastcrton Borough. Council to bo spent in establishing baths at Masterton for ladies. Tho council recently called • tenders for the. work, but the lowest tender was £78 above tho amount of Dr. Hosking's gift. No offer was subsequently accepted and, it the meeting of the council yesterday evening a letter was received from Dr. ,Hosking stating that, he desired that tho work should be done by the borough . staff under the supervision ,of the .borough engineer. The suggestion was, not accepted, a. ; motion being carried to call for fresh tenders for the work. The 'action ofthe council may mean the loss of, the doctor's generous gift, as:lie intimated to your representative that he intended withdrawing the offer, .and .to cable for a supply of £500 worth of radium, which lie considered would probably be more useful. - •'
