Tho body of a young man, subsequently identified as that of Harold M< Stevenson, 21 years of age, was found in the Avon River near Hereford Street Bridge this morning by a City Council omployee, who was clearing tho weeds out of the river. It appears that Stevenson >was very despondent prior to leaving his home- on June 16. He hired a double-barrelled gun from a, second-hand dealer, and was last seen alive riding along Colombo Street on the date mentioned. Subsequently the gun containing two discharged cartridges and pieces of string attached to the triggers was found in the river. When tho body was,examined this morning a gunehot wound was found m tho left temple. An inquest was ( h«ld to-rueht, when a verdict of | death from a self-inflicted gunshot wound was returned. ; . , AN, EPILEPTIC FIT. ' Dunedln, July 19. At the inquest on Gibson, who was found dead in bed on Saturday, tho medical evi-.l dence was to the effect that death was caused by an epileptic fit. A verdict was returned accordingly. ) Yesterday afternoon, about 2 o'clock, a married man, 52 years of age, and lately working as a stonemason, died suddenly at a boarding-house at 161 Ingestre Street. Deceased had, not been working for about a i week. Hβ was found by William Young, proprietor of the boarding-house,' yesterday sitting in the yard, and as ho looked 'ill Dr. Mackin was,sent for. Before ho arrived deceased had expired. An inquest v will be held this nibming at the Morgue.' ' A steward ,on s s. MotfowjuV James Lander, last night' had a narrow 'escape from death by drowning. Ho fell off tho Queen's wharf into the harbour, but luckily was rescued by Constable Millar and two Harbour Board officials, who happened to be near. George Dewdney, a''man about 75 years - of age, last night had the misfortuno to fall on the kerbmg in Upper Willis Street.
