ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
ACCIDENTALLY SUFFOCATED
The polico havo received particulars of an inquest held at Pongoroa concerning tho death of John Wallace, a driver, , who was killed on July 12, us the- result of a diay accident. From tho evidence it appeal s that deceases], who ivns in the employ of Mr. H. J. Coo, storekeeper,-Rakanui, uas proceeding to Waiowaka from Rakanui with a draj load of stores, drawn by three , horses. It was ascertained from tho footmarks of tho horses that when about a quarter of a mile from RaLanui tho two-lead-ers took a turn and tho draj capsized oVor> & slip, flith a drop of about eight feet. Deceased fell under the load, and was smothered in a lot of slush and mud about four feet deep. When he was found artificial methods of respiration were resorted to, to revavo him, but thoy proved unavailing A verdict was entered up to the effect that deceased was , accidentally suffocated. William Petty, residing at Mrs Ohapman's' boarding-house, Chester Street, died suddenly last night in the backyard, where .Mis Ciupm.in found him. Edward Johnston, a single man, aged 78, an old ago pensioner, was found dead outside his wharo at, Parara, ,whore he had lived alone for some years. Ho had complained of internal pains. Death was proved to have resulted from senile decay. A FALL OF STONE Westport.-July 16. Messrs. Roche and F. M'Lean, junior, who wero injured by a fall of stono from a truck at Cape Foulwind quarry, are still very Bad in the hospital 'Their condition is critical.
