ST. JOHN AMBULANCE.
PRESENTATION OF CERTIFICATES. ; A FIRST-AID DEMONSTRATION. ■ The annual meoting of tap Wellington Centre of tho St. John Ambulance Association was held in the Municipal Concert Hall last evening; ' The.Mayor (Dr, : A..,K. Newman) presided over a moderate, attendance. . The chairman' : '"eulogised the work of the society. The presence of, hundreds; of people whom it had trained, must have prevented an enormous amount of suffering all iovcr M» Zealand. In his medical, experienco in the London slums, ho had realised . the necu of nursing among the poor, as provided: bjvtho association:, Mrs. S..A. Rhodes, who had done so much for the association; had- asked Mrs. Newman to help her with a bazaar in aid of it, and he was sure they would have ajcry successful one: Tho now ambulance brougham, which was being obtained by the centre, would be a. very fine vehicle: He moved the adoption: of the report and balance-sheet, as already published. .. ■. ,• ' ':••' Mr. J. Q. W. Aitken seconded, the motion. Ho expressed great admiration for the. St. John imbalance Association, and especially the lursing section. When ho saw.nurses going ibout their errands of mercy, ho felt inclined :o lift his hat. and bow very profoundly. He ilso drew attention to the nursing dosses held Dy the association in Wellington. . The report and balance-sheet were adopted. "patient,. : who was supposed : to' have been/, badly knocked ibout in a tram accident, was brought in ivith' his arm. in a: sling, and plentifully -bauiasei, and, was .carried by,,a, first-aid, squad to the platform! " There they deposited him on abed, and.a party of .uniformed nurses,,-wear-ing ambulance' badges,.took off the .triangular first, aid bandages, arid put on .roller haulages in .'their stead,, .and..-otherwise;:-minis-tered' to the ."sufferer's" comfort. The method iif changing the sheets .without disturbing.the patient: was then shown ;by tho nurses. .-Two small boys .were also, bandaged in .realistic fashion; : and'marched-around the hall. ■"A nurse, who v.can bandage well,is an untold blessing to ; a.-patient with a fractured limb," remarked,the chairman. ' ■• Dr. C. M. Bcgg spoke of the good won: done by the Ambulanco Centre.. / A doctor on practice -frequently had- ..cases .whioh would have been much ■ better/ if .first-aid .-had been rendered. This kind. of. training should ..< be universal. ■' The nursing work was, perhaps, even more valuable. There, .were ■: man y) cases which were unsuitable for hospital .treatment, but -whioh:' required something' more than -the doctor's care,';and for these the St. John Ambulance was most :; useful. ~ V ..■-.-'• -•. - . The work '■• of Nurses .Sexton ' and Macandrew: was ;beyond' praise. V-Tho:.
