AUCKLAND NEWS.

(By Telcßraph.-SpMlal Correspondent.* Auokland, July 14. The question of the system by which Presbyterian ministers hold their pulpits was brought forward by Mr. G. J Garland at tho meeting of the Auckland Presbytery last evening, when he submitted an overture to, the General Assembly asking for'further consideration of the question of ministerial tenure of office. Mi. Garland said he did not contend that the ministerial tenure Bhould be limited to three years, as it was in the Methodist Church, but he did think it would be a'good thing to have a change with reasonable frequency. He did not suggest that many of the congregations in this district wanted a change, but such cases did occur, and it would be a very good thing to be able to make a change if it were desirable. Mr. A. J Entrioan seconded, and tho motion was carried. /

The preparatory work in connection with the Auckland dramago scheme is now being pushed on as quickly as possible by the engineer to tho Drainage Board. Bonngß are being taken in Hobson Bay and Orakei Bay along tho line of the proposed main sower, and the plans for the tanks and the outhli at Orakei are also being prepared. Tho plans of the Arch Hill gully sewer are also nearly completed, and it is expected that the calling for tenders for this work and for tho outfall contract will be authorised at the next meeting of tho Drainage Board. A great deal of survey information in regard to tho drainage district is being constantly' accumulated, aud this is entered up m a map drawn to a scale of 200 feet to the inoh. '

It is the intention of the Salvation Army authorities to 1 erect a shelter in Auckland to accommodate 100 men Brick is the material of which it will probably be constructed, and it will have separate quarters for men who may go to tho shelter whilo under tho influence of liquor. It is not intended that thoso who aro able to pay more than nominal charges shall take advantage of tho building, which is to be orccted within the next year. A People's Palace, similar to the one in Wollington, is also on tho building scheme of the army in Auckland.
