i.'A'.move in the direction of improving '■'. the Oriental Bay reclamation was made by < the Finance Committee of the City Council last night, when a . recommendation was brought forward "that steps be taken to givo effect to the suggestion that the present wall at Oriental Bay be raised with.a view of filling out the promenade to the full width and doing away with the pitched, slope! It was also recommended that a hand-rail be placed on top of tho wall. Councillor Devino pointed out that the proposed scheme would widen the footpath another 6ft. and greatly improve'the parado,:. It was stated ; that the Erst decision was to ihave the wall on the slope. The new idea.was to build tho wall straight up, ■■•■'.. Councillor Shirtcliffe moved that the matter should be referred back.t6 the committee. Councillor Smith was a' believer in the sloping wall, which would not'throw the spray so much as the straight Wall'. They would certainly get more ground for the walk with the straight wall, but if people conld not tisetho walk because of tho-spray it would not bo of much use, ,'Y ,' Councillor Luke supported the committeo's report. The sooner-tho.-wall was straightened up and made a job ..of the bettor. Tho suggestion and recommendation were agreed to.
