' .At ; the meeting•• of the Kairanga County Council yesterday,'a letter was received from thoßorongh: Council/ asking for. a conference on July 16 to consider, the matter,of bracing the, Fitzherbertßridge,"and also; to;discuss tho '.between the.■..statements of the respective engineers about the amount of timber .shifted from the bridge by the two councils. , It: was decidied to appoint tho members of the Fitzhftrbbrt- Riding,- the chairman, and the' inspector, as delegates to th 6 conference. The District Railway Engineer wrote, stating that the' Department could not agree to grant another crossing at the end of Cook Street, Linton;' . Counoillor Moody '. said that it was laid,out as a publib crossing on'the plans of the Crown grants, and he did not see how some of the settlors could get an outlet .without'the cfoseing. . Councillor Bryant" suggested that the-settlers of Linton (should get up a petition '-to strengthen the council's hands in the .matter. ' The roadmen of the county forwarded a petition to have their wages paid fortnightly, : but, as that alteration Would requiro tho attendance of two councillors every time cheques woroisigncd, and as councilors generally did not' see any advantage in fortnightly as against monthly payments, it. was decided to tako no action. A local resident states that the report that John Ray, the: Tβ Auto wing three-quarter,-had died from the injury which ho received in.the match;with the Wanganui Collegiate School, .played in I'almorston'■:recently, is incorrect. Mr. Apatari, of Pajmerston. when, questioned on the matter,; oaid that he had not heard of Ray's death,, and he also believed that the. report was incorrect. • The ■ Mounted Rifles camp here, was. concluded yesterday, the x concluding exercise 1 being ',outpost wor!; ,: under- the supervision, of the officers of the corps, and the attached instructors. Ou.-..'Monday-. evening, . Captain Peach,'gave an excellent; lecture on the same subject; and the practical work yesterday formed a good .supplement to the- lecture. ■ A feature of the camp has. been its internal arrangements, which--have been carried out oa'etridt regimental- liaas.
