NEW ARRIVALS.
THE ATHENICS IMMIGRANTS. • Over 400 British imhiigrants. arrived. by the Athenic yesterday. The. number included 165 A'ho had Government-assisted passages. These ,oomprised 73 women', 59 children, and ! 33 .men. Those "nominated" by friends in Nejv Zealand numbered 19 men, 14 women, and 9 children. There were 11 farmers among the assisted passenger's, the'samo number of farm labourers, 2 dairymen, 1 shepherd, 18 domestics, and 1 housekeeper.; The.capital of the assisted passengers ranged from .£25 to .£l2O. . An attempt by a person on the wharf to raise "three-cheers for the immigrants" fell rather-flat, and many remarks.about tho slackness, of employment were, heard, but though there was a large crowd on the wharf there was nothing approaching a demonstration. Mr. Stobart, the local, secretary of the Amalgamated Society' of Carpenters and Joiners, went aboard to tell his fcllow r tradesmen about the state of tho labour market. "; .■;■"■.
