Tho unemployed difficulty so keenly felt in many parts of Now Zealand seems to have touched Taranaki lighter than the majority of provinces. Tho dairying industry, with its certain market' and good prices, is probably tho sheet anchor of Taranaki's comfortable prosperity in the face of adverse times, but there are indications of other assets which lead to the opinion that tho wholo district will within a few years revel iu prosperity. The Stratford-Ongaruc railway i work, employing at present soino' eight hun- •■' drod men; is already contributing much ■to the importance, of the former town, but it seems as if tho great gainer of the Taranaki ?towne is going'to he New Plymouth.. The Taranaki Harbour Board is now'making, arraugemente in connection .with the quarto) ; of a million loan, which is to bo spent i ■',' transformiug the Now Plymouth so that it will accommodato ocean-goinf : etoamers. New Plymouth business, peoplt claim that the improvement-of their; bar-V bour will put them twenty-two Jiouracloeoi to Sydney than Auckland. ■■'■: Besidee , whicl >■ farmora will save some £40.000 a year bj tho non-transhipment to Wellington of ; pro« ; will be put direct here on to the Home ocean tramps.. The prospects of the oil industry were, never moro bright than- : at present. One well .at Moturoa ie actually ■:. turning out ten barrcls'of. oil a day. which, quantity pays working expenses. Tuis ha* never been done before. Then;,there,is the iron-eand . industry, which Eome day mußt be a big thing for tho district. . Tho Strat-ford-Ongaruo railway will open up. thousauds of acres of new lands, and the samo thing will /happen farther north in tho Mokau when the Native areae are properly settled. It will be seen that-with ber great, mineral and produce resources the .Taranaki district 'should prove one of the .wealthiest in.; New/ Zealand.. . '"..'; '•" ' : •■. '■('
