MANURING POTATOES.
SOME EFFECTIVE FORMULAE. .Experiments carried out by: the Edinburgh and Kast Scotland Collego of. Agriculture led to the conclusion that good results would follow the manuring of potatoes with a mixed manure containing tho . following proportions:—lewt. sulphate- of ammonia, 4owt. superphosphate, lewt. sulphate of potash— $cwt. ;. ■.■•.'■• This mixed manu'ro would contain in 6cwt. about 2211b. of nitrogen, 1621b. of phosphate of lime, and 541b. of potash. It would give an analysis of 3Jlb. ammonia per cent., 24Jb. phosphate of lime per cent., Blb. potash per cont. In Wellington the this mixture would cost about 9s. per cwt. A good dressing per acre would be about ljcwtf of the mixture, so that the cost would be , 13s. 6di per acre. ; Cyanamide, tho now nitrogenous manure, mado from the atmosphero and limo by the aid of_ electricity, is a good manure for potatoes, instead of ilie sulphate of ammonia. It is .understood that' tlie 'Notodden manufacturers of cyanamide havo appointed agents in New Zealand, so that it may shortly be procurable in this country. Great interest will no doubt bo taken by New Zealand farmers in this new manuTO, which represente the results of the first practical process of drawing upon the huge supplies of nitrogen, which float, in .-the air. It. is said to mix badly .with, .other manures, and'tlerefore needs' ; to be ap-; plied separately.'rather'tlian in a mixture. •' ' .At WoreroaVthe best results .with potatoes recorded in the 1908 lieporf followed.the use" of 2cwt. 'superphosphate and ljcwt. bbnedust mixed. .This cost £1 os. 6di:per acre.
