TREE-PLANTING ON MOUNT VICTORIA.
Sir, The City Council are reported as prepatmg.to plant several"acres on the northern slope of Mount, Victoria. I' hope a'word of ivaniuig will not bo misconstrued. : Unless prot-ected from iho northerly winds until the trees are well established, it; will bo labour in vain—loss or time, money, and trees. I speak of upwards of 30 years' experience. The only way I could get .trees to grow was to collect wom-out coal baskets off. the .beach cut the bottoms out, and put them upside down ovor the plants, firmly: pegging them to the ground. l By the time the baskets were decayed and broken the. young tree was able to take, care of itself. Of course, in planting ■ many of trees a sufficient supply of .baskets could not bo obtained, but some substitute will be absolutely necessary, otherwise hardly a tree will be left alive in, twelve months.—l am, etc., FRANCIS STEVENS. • Oriental Bay, July 5, 1909.'
