SIR WILLIAM STEWARD AND SOUTH AFRICA.
I Sir,—-I.,havo only this morning seen' the letter, ofVl'Sakabond" which was- published in;,'jbiif-issue of yesterday's date'under tho aboVo heading. Tho, fact. that "Sakabond"' has "not' been in'Soutii Africa for five years or more" is sufficient to show that ho has probably got out'.of touch with the position of affairs'in' Natal. and • other States of that interesting country;. V- ' '. .. '' . He.: is right'in saying that in speaking to my interviewer, as to Natal's attitude I should , havo used the-word "unification" instead of "federation." . • Speaking of the Governor, . I referred to him as ( Sir, Matthew Nathan (not Watson); tho .mistakeis the reporter's, .not mine. I have no intention of making any "public deliverances" -in v regard, to -affairs in- South. Africa,_ but I think I have a pretty correct appreciation of the . position and conditions obtaining ,at tho present time.'—l am, etc., WILLIAM Jv'STEWAED. Wollington,: July- 8V;"1909.-V . - ' [Sir William, Steward l correctly, stated the name' of . the Governor of Natal. The error was tho printer's.] •
