WHY THE RETRENCHMENT?

Discussing the question of a Government retrenchment scheme to-day; Mr. Bart ;Kent, Chairman of tho Auckland Chamber of Commerce, stated it as a positive, fact, that tho total expenditure of the \ Dominion for 1908-9 exceeded its total revenuo by £584,828.
