SUNDAY' COCK-FIGHTING 'AND DIRTY ABATTOIRS. ' (By Telegraph.—Special; Oorrcspondent) Chrlstchurch, July ' ' Speaking last night of his recent visit to' Sydney, .where -he acted as yan honorary' | S.P.C.A., inspector, Mr. Zonch, ■ the ■.inspector. of tho Christchurch society,- said i. that ho first turned his attention to a case i-of cock-fighting, but unfortunately his only witness, -a reporter wbo had written a long faccoiuit of the.iightrwould not come for[.ward to give evidence, so lie had to drop the '.intended prosecution. He,traced two of tho birds, however,, and found that the whole of their breast and leg feathers had been plucked off in tho contest. The fight had i taken place en a Sunday afternoon, and two .of th« birds were killed under circumstances of great cruelty. "Tho abattoirs in Sydney,-' ho declared, "are a positive disgraco to any community, and the Government inspection is absurd. Tho abattoirs are dirty, th(ire is a dreadful smell all ever the place, and the cattle are badly treated. I saw only one small tub of water, which was used for washing the hands ofi the meu, dirty cloths, and tho moat •also, I mado representations'.to the health authorities over, thorc; but they said it was useless -to . try to do anything at prosent, •because the new abattoirs would provide for everything being-up-to-date.
