The report of the Norwich Union Life Insurance Society for 1908, states that in the ordinary life department 9366 policies ivere issued, assuring .£1,982,451, aud carrying new premiums of .£229,035. Messrs. G. S. Meredith, and Co., Waimate, report South Canterbury' grain and produce prices for the week ending July 6 as follow:— Wheat: The inquiry during the past week has been very good, and as indicated m our last report it has had the effect of hardening tho market, and we expect to see a further firming shortly. Values, to-day are 4s. (2d. on trucks, country stations, for velvet,' 4s. Id. for tuscan, with very few sellers. Good whole fowlwheat is in'strong demand at 33.'lid. to 4s. f.o.b.s.i. Good clean broken seconds 3s. 3d. on trucks. Oats: Tho demand has improved during the past'week, and values,aro:—Gartons Is. 7d, duns Is. 6d., and Danish Is. 5d., all on tracks, ■ conutry stations; sacks sjd. Chaff: Owing to tho continued wet weather very little is doing in chaff. It will be somo timo before the machines are able to move on to the ground, and, as very little is going forward, there is a very good inquiry. Prime bright oatsheaf chaff is Belling at £1 2s. 6d. on trucks, country stations. , Potatoes: Tho market is a little'easier, owing, no doubt, to the largo quantities being sent forward. A great many of the potatoes that are now on land will require t6 be picked over before - marketing. Freshly-picked samples of prime Up-to-Dates aro worth .£3 7s. 6d. to £1 10s. on trucks.
