SCULLING.
9 ■ Mr. J. H. Parkor, of Christchurch, ono of tho backers of Richard Arnst, who has loft oh a trip to England, said, in the course of an intervfew in Sydney:—"lt is our idea te endeavour, to emulate the traditions followed in tho big yacht races, 'and tho Davis Tennis Cup—that is, challenger for the world's championship como to tho country of the holder. We thought it would be putting; races for the title on a bettor footing if this course were followed, and Barry came to our Dominion to row. But, of courso, wo cannot stand in Arnst's;light if he fails to get a Taco, otbprwisoithan going to England and America after one. At tho samo' time, wa ar,o-avcrso to his hawking tho title hway from this pifrtr 'of tW world. As' far as I can see therodoes not appear to bo anyone at present capable of lowering Arnst's colours jn, Australia Now Zealand, although I understand a couplo of your best cyclists aro progressing with tho sculls, notably Larcombe and Hagnoy. We hopo that Arnst has not proved himself so Rood as to scare other aspirants for the' title, and look to some one 1 coming forward to challenge him sooner or later. Of course, if ho cannot get a race, out here, then he must go Home and row. We offered Barry £100 moro m expenses to como out hero than lip offered Arnst to 50 Home to meet him, but ho docs not seom inclined to come. I'vo found that tho climatic - conditions •at Homo are very similar to those of Now Zealand, so I do not expect Arnst would suffer in this respect."
