CLEAN-LEGGED SHIRE HORSES.
The profusion of hair on the legs of Shire ! horses has long been regarded by other than enthusiastic admirers as a disfigurement and hindrance to the popularity of the breed. So long as this point is accounted a characteristic, of the breed,' however, there is little hope: of alteration, as the, farmer" must'do his best to comply with the requirements of,the best buyers. It is known that the quantity of hair on tho legs is one of the chief drawbacks, to the ; breed in. America and other importing .countries, but' oven ; at.Homo, and particularly, in heavy land districts, the objection is pronounced. ing with respect to this question,, a correspondent: describes "the great bush of hair on; the legs of Shire horses as a deformity in appearance and a nuisance in farm work." If a necessary'evil, it should" not!be cultivated and encouraged, as is done, deliberately, and in his' opinion if any: breeder can ever develop a Shire' as' clean-legged as a< Clydesdale or a Suffolk without, reducing substance, he will be the: greatest .horse improver of 'all .time. ; t v '';;.•;.■ - ; -; ; -.-,-<- ■•■.■■ -~-.
